The Kalahari Suricata Suricatta Project was started in 2000 to study meerkats in the wild. The few wild meerkats groups suffered great losts after a drought hit the area. When the rains returned, the groups started to gain their lost territories and numbers. A groups of tamed rescued meerkats were released to help bring back the meerkat population and add new genetics to the gene pool.
